Hello to everyone from Ft. Wayne, Indiana! I am here in the midwest attending the Federation of Genealogical Societies Annual Conference. . I have been here since Sunday and attended the board meeting on Monday and have had an interesting experience meeting so many people, now that things have started, and I have really enjoyed going through the exhibit hall. I will be giving a presentation shortly and am also speaking tomorrow as well.

While working my way through the exhibit hall, I met a woman who has a wonderful booth and has turned her family artifacts into a neat book on her father’s experience in World War II. The book and website are called “A Thousand Letters Home.” The book resulted from her going through all of the letters and information left by her father. What a beautiful tribute to her father—to both of her parents. But her site is also the kind of site that might inspire others to go through their own family artifacts and to see what kinds of stories can be fold from one’s own family treasures.

Observations—not many people of color are here in attendance although there are genealogical groups here in Indiana, some in Illinois and there is also one in Wisconsin. But nevertheless, I have met some truly nice people whom I have known online, which has been a treat. I have seen some of the veterans and the larger companies such as the sites like Ancestry and Family Search as well. But truly enjoy interacting with some of the lesser known entities as well. There was a wonderful woman also making some unusual items out of photographs and turning them into quilts and other heirloom quality items. And several vendors selling Flip Pals, as expected and I did see a few others selling scanners as well.

Some news from FGS the 2015 annual conference will unfold in February 2015–in conjunction with Roots Tech, in Salt Lake City. This will not be one giant conference, there will be two simultaneous conferences—Roots Tech and FGS going on at the same time. There will be some join activities, but the two conferences will be unfolding at the same time. The Salt Palace will truly be one busy place! This might be the time to go ahead and make one’s reservations early.

Don’t forget to check out the Facebook groups and also the Facebook pages, such as the AfriGeneas page, where one can read some truly interesting biographies. Also follow Low Country Africana on Facebook, one can find out about a good number of new activities coming up all over the Low Country.

By the way also in early September, note that the National Archives will be hosting a Virtual Genealogy Fair and it will be shared online via webcast for free! This was planned after they canceled the real time Genealogy Fair was cancelled when the federal budget crisis affected it. This will take place in early September.

Well I realized that this is a shorter than usual podcast, but I have a presentation today here at the FGS Conference today. Follow me on Facebook and Twitter, I shall be posting images.

In the meantime, thanks for listening, and do have a great week and remember to keep documenting, and keep sharing what you find.
